What to do, oh, what to do?

Valentine's Day is coming up, and what is a mom to do?

I know Valentine's Day is supposed to be all romantic and mushy, but I think of it as a family holiday. You know, Valentine cards and stickers and conversation hearts. So I need a great idea of what to do for my family this year.

Two years ago my family was enthralled by The Phantom of the Opera; so for Valentine's Day I bought that movie. I put a red Hershey's-Kiss rosebud (tied with a black ribbon, of course) on each persons dinner plate, and we had a nice dinner. And for dessert I made a dark-chocolate cake, filled with dark-chocolate ganache and raspberry goo, topped off by a Phantom of the Opera mask that was molded with white chocolate.

Last year I made each person a bean-bag crab (why crabs? Because they were cute and the kids liked them), and placed a crab on each dinner plate before dinner. I had a sign on the table that said,
"Crabby Valentine's Day!"

But this year I am uninspired. So if you have any great ideas, let me know. If not . . .

. . . then what good are you?!

Well, all right. I suppose that's not a very loving sentiment. But if you have any great ideas, let me know. :-)

I do not have any brilliant ideas for Valentines Day this year, but I am planning on making heart-shaped pancakes for breakfast with whipped cream and strawberries. Then I plan on having some kind of treasure hunt with the kids using red paper hearts with clues on them. What the treasure is I still have no idea, but maybe I'll drop by your blog later and see what other thoughts are thrown your way.

I've thought about it and I don't have any amazing ideas, but I did think of some unusual ones. Don't know if they'll work, you might even think they're lame or you've already come up with your own idea, but here they are:

1.Make a giant "Hershey Kiss" from rice krispies and marshmallows (or whatever you like). Wrap it in aluminum foil and add a tag on the top with your special message. Your on your own there.

2. Create a love tree (don't laugh to hard). Find a branch outside that has several smaller branches. Place it in a pot of soil. Cut out an assortment of hearts and string each one with ribbon. Then have each family member write what they love on the hearts and hang it.

3. My primary kids loved these one year. Flowerpots. Take flat-bottomed ice cream cups and place them on a cookie sheet or in muffin tins. Fill cones with 1/3 cup brownie batter and bake 35-40 minutes at 350'f. When cooled insert a fake rose in the center or whatever you choose.

Yeah, not exciting. Probably should have kept them to myself.
